Start with the clinic’s privacy process
CDC notes that confidential STI testing options are available. But the exact privacy process can differ by clinic, how you pay, whether insurance is used and how results are delivered.
Questions worth asking before you test
- How will results be delivered?
- Will the visit or test appear in an online patient portal?
- If insurance is used, what information could appear on an explanation of benefits or other billing communication?
- Who can access the medical record?
- Is there a way to discuss privacy preferences before testing?
Confidential does not always mean anonymous
A confidential medical test can still become part of a medical record. Some testing programs may offer different privacy arrangements, but you should not assume a visit is anonymous unless the testing site explicitly says so.
What Get Tested PB collects
Get Tested PB does not collect symptoms, diagnoses, test results, sexual history or medical intake information. Appointment buttons send you to an independent healthcare provider’s own website.
What if I am worried about insurance privacy?
Ask the testing provider before using insurance. Billing communications and portal settings can vary. The safest approach is to ask exactly what will be generated and where it will be sent before the visit is processed.
Do I still need to tell the clinician about exposure sites?
For accurate testing, yes. The body sites exposed can affect which samples are useful. Sharing that information with the healthcare professional can help them choose appropriate urine, blood, throat or rectal testing.
